Ben Rao’s Bio

Meet Ben Rao: Author, Entrepreneur, Philanthropist, and Senior Care Advocate

In the heart of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, resides Ben Rao—a multifaceted individual known for his roles as an author, life-long entrepreneur, philanthropist, and unwavering advocate for senior care. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Ben’s upbringing was shaped by the loving guidance of his stepfather, Tom, and his devoted mother, Peela, who dedicated 40 years to the not-for-profit senior services industry.

Ben’s journey into the world of senior care advocacy was a deeply personal one, sparked by the unexpected challenge of transitioning Tom into senior care. Faced with the emotional and financial struggles that many families encounter during this process, Ben realized the lack of direction and resources available to navigate this complex journey. This firsthand experience became the driving force behind his commitment to assisting families in transitioning their loved ones into senior care, combining personal empathy with professional expertise in the long-term care industry.

Currently residing in Lee’s Summit with his wife, Rhonda, and their two children, Maddy and Charlie, Ben has made a home in a historically rich environment. Their abode is a meticulously renovated building that once served as both Lee’s Summit Hospital and the Dayton Hotel in Downtown Lee’s Summit. Ben’s commitment to community development is evident through his contribution to the establishment of Lee’s Summit’s first entrepreneurial incubator and office space, creatively repurposing a formerly vacant post office.

As an entrepreneur, Ben’s endeavors extend beyond the pages of his book to create real-world impact as the founder of Family Shepherd, a company dedicated to helping families with a loved one transitioning into senior living. His commitment to providing valuable resources for families facing senior care challenges reflects his professional dedication and a genuine passion for enhancing the lives of seniors and their loved ones.

Ben lives in the renovated historic building that once was the Lee’s Summit Hospital and the Dayton Hotel in Downtown Lee’s Summit. He lives with his wife of 25 years, Rhonda, empty nested by their two children, Maddy and Charlie, and Charlie dog, a border collie who goes to the office daily. Ben serves as a member, partner, and past- president on many committees in the community.
